Here is more info on her Helsinki presentation:
"Defining Success in Girls’ Sport for Development: A Measurement,
Evaluation, and Comparison of Best Practices Across Three Continents."
Betsy spent a month each in Battambang, Cambodia; Kilifi, Kenya;
and Buenos Aires, Argentina doing field research.
While she was in each country, she interviewed and observed at non-profit organizations that used team sports as a tool to help improve the lives of girls and young women in the area. In Cambodia and Kenya the sport played was soccer, and in Buenos Aires the sport was field hockey.
In addition to playing the team sports and competing in matches and tournaments, the three programs also provide social, economic and educational development opportunities for the young women. Some of the program's initiatives included: developing leadership life skills, providing nutrition and reproductive health information,
contributing to educational scholarships and vocational opportunities, encouraging social integration, and building the individual capacity, confidence and self-esteem of the young women.
