Matt Pottinger is a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Chairman of the China Program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and CEO of Garnaut Global, a strategic advisory firm focused on China and policymaking, serving both asset managers and corporate clients.  He is the author of The Boiling Moat, Urgent Steps to Defend Taiwan.

Previously, Mr Pottinger served as U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor from 2019 to 2021.  Prior to that he was Asia Senior Director on the National Security Council, leading U.S. strategy in the Indo-Pacific and overseeing policy shifts on China and Asia Senior Director on the National Security Council, leading U.S. strategy in the Indo-Pacific and overseeing policy shifts on China.

From 2005 to 20010, Mr Pottinger was a US Marine, rising to the rank of major and military intelligence officer.  He completed combat deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan and was decorated with a Bronze Star among other distinctions.
