Hi Steve!
Adam is a son of Park city, the grandson of Carolyn and Jim Santy (an ex-Marine during Korea)! He graduated from high school here about 9 years ago. From the 7th grade on he and a few others attended an auxiliary ROTC unit of the Air Force at the University of Utah. He attended the "U" for a year but was deployed by the National Guard and eventually decided to make a full time career with the Guard.
He has had four different deployments -- first, shepherding floating caskets in New Orleans after the hurricane, second tending the fence on the Arizona border with Mexico, third leading convoys in Iraq locating and destroying IEDs along the way, fourth scouting ahead of convoys in Afghanistan with a fellow sniper to identify (and take out if appropriate) enemies and locations before the convoy arrivals.
It was during the Iraq deployment that he narrowly escaped with his life when his lead vehicle was bombed. In Afghanistan he and his associate made use of a small drone (recoverable) which they sent out from their vehicle to identify GPS of the enemy.
Since returning to Utah, Adam has taken up helicopter flying and is now qualified as a trainer himself. He is also qualifying at rappelling. (?) I believe he was recently promoted to Staff (or Technical) Sergeant -- saying he greatly appreciated the new pay scale! (As a side note, I remember making that rank in 1945 with an increase to $75 per month.)
