As a teen ager Scruffy's Scottish father sent him into the Algonquin forest with an Ojibway indian who taught him to live off the land with only the clothes on his back.  After high school he became a "hard rock" miner in the gold fields in northern Ontario -- an experience that stood him well in directing the shoring up of the walls in the escape tunnel from Stalag  Luft lll -- after having been shot down in his Spitfire by a  Messerschmitt while protecting his wingman, and captured early in November 1941.  He had also been enlisted by his Uncle Adrien in a super secret intelligence "Network" before his RCAF over-seas assignment that stood him well in his German captivity.  Copies of his book are available from Amazon as The Survivor: Scruffy's War=
