Our speaker for Feb 16 is Dr. Jay Jacobson. The title for his presentation is, “Death in America: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.” Here is a biographical sketch:

JAY A. JACOBSON
Jay Jacobson, MD, MACP is Professor Emeritus of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases and former Chief of the Division of Medical Ethics and Humanities at LDS Hospital and the University Of Utah School of Medicine. He trained at the U.of Florida, the CDC, the U.of Utah, and the U.of Chicago. He joined the Internal Medicine Department in 1978. In 1989, he established a new Division of Medical Ethics with colleagues from the University's Colleges of Law and Humanities, and its School of Medicine. He served on the AMA's Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs, the American College of Physicians' Ethics and Human Rights Committee, local hospital Ethics Committees, and chaired the School of Medicine's Institutional Review Board. He authored or coauthored over 100 articles, book chapters, and the book, The Patient as Victim and Vector: Ethics and Infectious Diseases.
From 1999 to 2003, Dr. Jacobson directed the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation project, The Partnership to Improve End-of-Life Care in Utah. He has received the American Medical Association’s Isaac Hays and John Bell Award for Leadership in Medical Ethics and Professionalism, a nomination for the American Association of Medical Colleges Humanism in Medicine Award, and the University Of Utah School of Medicine Alumni Distinguished Service Award. In 2008, he was named a Master by the American College of Physicians. Now retired from the University of Utah, he continues as an Infectious Disease and Medical Ethics consultant for Intermountain Healthcare Hospitals. In 2010-11, he served as President of the Salt Lake City Rotary Club. He served on the Governor’s Commission for Pandemic Preparedness and the Utah Hospital Association’s Crisis Standards of Care Committee. He serves on the Boards of the United Jewish Federation and The Inclusion Center for Community Justice. He teaches in the U. of Utah’s Osher Adult Learning Program.
