During the Korean War, Gen. Shutler led raiding parties into North Korea to blow up railroads in addition to fighting at the Chosin Reservoir. He also flew F-4 fighters during the Vietnam War and served as Deputy Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Carter Administration, including Operation Eagle Claw in 1980 to try and free Americans held hostage by the Iranian.
