Like him or not, Dick Cheney left a mark, which to me is a sign of a life well lived.
Joe Hunter worked on Capitol Hill while Dick Cheney was rising through the ranks of House Leadership. Joe served in the Bush '41 administration while Dick was Secretary of Defense, and Joe returned to work on the Hill during Dick's tenure as VP. Joe even got chewed out by him a couple of times.
Did Joe always agree with Mr. Cheney? No. But, Mr. Cheney was principled, tough and smart. We could use a few Dick Cheneys right now.
