Description: "To Walk in all His Ways: John Robinson's Ministry and the Ma
yflower Compact\n\n"To Walk in all His Ways: John Robinson's Ministry and t
he Mayflower Compact" John Robinson, the Pilgrims' pastor, served the Engli
sh Separatist Church in Leiden, Holland until his death in 1625. He had lon
ged to lead his congregation to America, but circumstances prevented him fr
om sailing aboard Speedwell and Mayflower with his parishioners. Robinson,
describing himself as "an unfeigned well-willer of your happy success in th
is hopeful voyage," wrote a pastoral letter that was read to all the passen
gers before the two ships departed the English port of Southampton in Augus
t 1620. The minister encouraged his listeners to exercise forbearance and f
orgiveness as they undertook the new responsibilities of "civil government"
and said, "let your wisdom and godliness appear ... in choosing such perso
ns as do entirely love, and will diligently promote the common good..." His
description of a civil community held together by commitment to one anothe
r would shape the vision and language of the Mayflower Compact. It is the g
uiding document behind a foundational document. Robinson's letter was rever
ed by the colonists. It was first printed in London in February 1622, in th
e 1630s William Bradford copied the letter into his manuscript Of Plimoth P
lantation, and Bradford's nephew Nathaniel Morton printed the letter in New
England's Memorial (1669), the first published book on Plymouth Colony's h
istory. Richard Pickering, the Museum's Deputy Executive Director and Chief
Historian, will explore church covenants, congregational administration, a
nd their influence on the Mayflower Compact and Plymouth Colony's groundbre
aking experiment in self-government. His brief talk will be followed by the
chance to ask questions on legal, economic, and church history in the colo
 ny.Richard Pickering\nDeputy Executive Director\n(508) 746-1622 ×8345\n\n
